Returning to work after kids in Ireland.

This is a practical starting point, not a promise that a scheme, employer, course, or childcare place will suit or accept you. Check the linked official source before acting.

01 / Start with the real constraint

Map time, care, travel, and income first.

A return plan is easier to evaluate when it is concrete. Write down the weekly hours you can reliably cover, travel limits, childcare hand-offs, the minimum take-home income you need, and whether part-time, flexible, remote, or fixed hours would work.

Do not assume that returning means losing every existing support. The Department of Social Protection publishes a current overview of supports that may continue while working. Eligibility depends on your own circumstances, so confirm it with Intreo before ending or changing a claim.

02 / Childcare

Use the National Childcare Scheme calculator.

The National Childcare Scheme provides universal and income-assessed subsidies towards eligible childcare. Its official page links to the application route, subsidy calculator, and childcare search. Availability still depends on providers, and a subsidy does not create a childcare place.

03 / Income supports

Check the transition, not just the salary.

The Back to Work Family Dividend can support some families moving from specified welfare payments into employment or self-employment. It may run for up to two years if its conditions are met. Working Family Payment is a separate weekly, tax-free payment for qualifying employees with children and depends on family income, hours, and other conditions.

Rates and qualification rules can change. Use the official pages and ask Intreo about the effect of your planned hours and start date.

04 / Flexible work

A right to request is not an automatic right to receive.

Ireland has statutory routes to request flexible working for caring purposes and remote working. The Workplace Relations Commission code explains eligibility, procedure, employer consideration, records, and complaint routes. A request can still be refused on permitted grounds, so read the current code rather than relying on informal summaries.

05 / Skills and return routes

Verify every live opportunity at source.

Springboard+ can offer free or heavily subsidised courses, including routes for unemployed people, returners, and people already in employment. Course eligibility and delivery vary. The official catalogue is the source of truth.

Employer returnships change frequently. Search the employer’s own careers site and check the current location, salary, contract type, entry criteria, closing date, and whether a permanent job is guaranteed. Do not rely on an old list of company programmes.

06 / Present the career break honestly

Show current evidence, not a defensive story.

Name the period plainly, then focus on relevant experience, current skills, recent learning, volunteer or project work where it is real, and the practical availability you can commit to. Do not invent activity to fill a gap.

If you built a genuine product while retraining, you can create a private project draft on Built In Ireland and later request structured feedback. That is a product record, not a job placement or employment reference.
